For a 59-year-old pre-retiree sitting on a six-figure dividend core, the choice between iShares Core Dividend Growth ETF (DGRO) and Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (SCHD) usually gets framed as a yield contest. SCHD pays more today. The quieter story is that DGRO has delivered 250% over the past ten years versus SCHD's 233%, and the gap is not just noise.
The common assumption is that SCHD's stricter quality screens should protect capital better. Yet DGRO's looser filter has quietly outperformed. DGRO focuses on dividend growth and a track record of increases, rather than the rigid profitability and payout ratio metrics that SCHD uses. That wider net lets DGRO capture more high-growth tech and healthcare names that SCHD often excludes.
Over the last decade, this approach has paid off. DGRO's total return edge comes from capital appreciation, not yield. While SCHD's higher current income feels safer, DGRO's holdings have grown earnings faster. For someone still years from drawing down, that growth matters more than a few extra basis points of yield today.
The lesson is not that SCHD is bad. It is a fine fund. But for pre-retirees with time left in the market, DGRO's looser quality filter has been the better engine. The yield gap is real, but the return gap is real too.
