JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon is not fully convinced that the massive spending spree on artificial intelligence will deliver the returns that investors are betting on. While the banking chief acknowledges the technology's potential, he warned that the current frenzy around AI may be overheating, with companies pouring billions into infrastructure without a clear payoff in sight.
Still, Dimon is willing to consider one of the more ambitious ideas to come out of the AI build-out: placing data centers in orbit. He expressed interest in SpaceX's plan to launch server farms into space, a concept that could bypass some of the energy and land constraints facing terrestrial data centers. The idea involves using satellite networks to process data in low Earth orbit, potentially reducing latency for certain applications and tapping into solar power more directly.
Dimon's comments come as Wall Street wrestles with how to value the AI boom. While some executives see a once-in-a-generation opportunity, others worry about a bubble. The JPMorgan chief's stance reflects a broader split among business leaders, who are eager to capitalize on AI but wary of repeating past tech hype cycles. For now, Dimon is keeping his feet on the ground, even if his curiosity is reaching for the stars.
