US housing prices are forcing more young adults to live at home for longer

A growing number of young adults are delaying moving out on their own, as soaring home prices and stubbornly high rents make independent living feel like a distant goal. New data shows that more Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 are living with their parents or family members, a trend that has accelerated in the wake of the pandemic and the uneven recovery of the so-called K-shaped economy.

For those on the lower end of the income scale, the math simply does not work. Wages have not kept pace with the cost of shelter, and the rental market offers little relief. Even young professionals with steady jobs are finding it difficult to save for a down payment while paying rent, leaving many with no choice but to stay in their childhood bedrooms.

The trend is reshaping household dynamics and delaying major life milestones like marriage and homeownership. Analysts point to a structural shortage of affordable housing as the root cause. Until supply catches up with demand, the number of young adults living at home is expected to remain elevated. For now, the American dream of owning a home is being replaced by a more modest goal: simply affording a place of one's own.
