A dramatic expansion in private credit has pushed the fund finance market past the $1 trillion threshold, according to a new report from Moody’s Ratings. The milestone was reached last year as investment vehicles increasingly turned to borrowing to manage liquidity needs and navigate delayed exits from portfolio companies.
Fund finance, which encompasses loans made to investment funds rather than to the companies they invest in, has grown rapidly alongside the broader private credit boom. Moody’s analysts noted that these facilities are now a critical tool for fund managers, allowing them to smooth cash flows, meet capital calls, and bridge timing gaps between deploying capital and realizing returns.
The surge reflects a structural shift in the asset management landscape. As private equity and private credit funds hold assets for longer periods due to a sluggish exit environment, they require additional liquidity to maintain operations and return capital to investors. Fund-level borrowing provides a flexible solution, enabling managers to avoid forced asset sales or disruptive capital calls.
Moody’s highlighted that the growth in fund finance has been broad-based, spanning subscription lines, net asset value loans, and hybrid structures. However, the rating agency also cautioned that the rapid expansion introduces new risks, including leverage concentration and potential mismatches between loan maturities and fund lifecycles. As the market matures, lenders and fund managers alike will need to carefully manage these exposures to sustain the asset class’s momentum.
