Passive income is the closest thing investors have to financial gravity. It pulls in money whether you are at your desk, on a beach, or asleep, and it lands in your account no matter what the broader market did that week. Earned income depends on showing up. Dividend income depends on a board of directors deciding to keep the checks coming.
For investors looking at two of the most established names in healthcare, the math on a 500-share position is straightforward. Johnson & Johnson currently pays an annual dividend of $4.76 per share. Owning 500 shares means you collect roughly $2,380 per year, or about $198 per month. Pfizer, meanwhile, pays $1.68 per share annually. That same 500-share stake delivers around $840 per year, or roughly $70 per month.
Combined, a 1,000-share portfolio split evenly between the two companies brings in just over $3,200 annually. That is not life-changing money for most people, but it is a meaningful stream of cash that requires no extra effort once the shares are bought. The real draw is the reliability. Both companies have paid dividends for decades, and Johnson & Johnson has increased its payout for over 60 consecutive years. Pfizer's dividend history is shorter but still stretches back more than a decade without a cut.
Of course, dividend income is not guaranteed. A company can always reduce or suspend its payout if earnings turn south or if it needs to preserve cash for a large acquisition. But for conservative investors who want to build a slow, steady income stream, these two stocks have historically been about as dependable as it gets. The key is to reinvest those quarterly payments over time, letting the snowball effect turn a few thousand dollars a year into something much larger down the road.
