The Athol Finance and Warrant Advisory Committee has recommended approval for 30 out of 34 articles slated for the upcoming Town Meeting. The committee voted against two of the remaining articles and decided to hold two others until the next meeting.
The two articles that failed to get the committee's backing both involve the town taking on responsibility for maintaining private roadways. One of the articles, Article 29, would have amended the town's bylaws to address this issue. Committee members expressed concerns about the long-term financial liability such a move would create for the town, arguing that taxpayers should not be on the hook for roads that are not publicly owned.
The two articles that were tabled will be revisited at a future meeting, giving the committee more time to review the details and gather additional information. The full list of recommendations will be presented to voters at the Town Meeting, where residents will have the final say on each article. The meeting is expected to cover a range of budget items and local policy changes, with the finance committee's guidance carrying significant weight in the decision-making process.
